With plenty to see and do, no matter what state you are in, here are some of the best summer road trips in Australia, from day trips to week-long adventures, there is something for everyone.
The Alpine Way, New South Wales (121kms)
Without snow covering the mountains and hills of the Snowy Mountains, you can experience the stark beauty of Kosciuszko National Park. With endless views of winding roads and tree-lined valleys, every stop is a photo opportunity. Travel through the villages of Thereadbow and Dead Horse Gap, or stop in Jindabyne to take in the region’s largest artificial lake. For those interested in hydroelectricity, check out the Snowy Hydro information centre to discover more about the largest engineering project undertaken in Australia.
Heritage Highway, Tasmania (200kms)
Trace the history of Tasmania by following the original road laid by convicts between Hobart and Launceston. Drive through farmlands, Georgian villages and stop to enjoy the local history in Richmond, one of the few colonial style villages in Australia. From coastal lookouts to tree-lined vistas and historical convict trails, the Heritage Highway has it all.
Great Ocean Road, Victoria (243km)
Known as one of the most visually appealing drives in the country, the Great Ocean Road features some of the most well-known sights Australia has to offer. Winding along the coast of Victoria from Allansford to Torquay, witness the stunning Twelve Apostles, Grampian National Park and amazing sunsets over the Bass Strait.
Sydney to Canberra Via Kiama (340kms)
Make up a picnic and enjoy the beautiful national parks on your way to Canberra. From the blow- hole at Kiama, to Fitzroy Falls in Kangaroo Valley there are plenty of natural wonders to behold on this short drive. Once in the ACT take the tourist drive and enjoy the local wildlife or check out some of the nation’s best museums.
Gibb River Road ( 660km)
Not for the faint hearted, this is less a road and more a former cattle route which winds through the Kimberly adjoining Derby. Often closed by flooding in the wet season, it has been upgraded to a gravel two land road with some bitumen. Enjoy unique flora and fora, Windjana Gorge National Park and the stunning King Leopold Ranges. It is a drive unlike any other and you do need to be prepared.
Melbourne to Sydney (880kms)
Forget flying and drive instead. Experience the beauty of the countryside with national parks and picturesque views throughout. Stop at Bega for some cheese or go whale watching in Eden, or simply enjoy the amazing drive over the Sea Cliff Bridge, a stunning road which hangs over the ocean. Take the coast roads to enjoy untouched beaches or keep inland to take in the southern highlands.
The Coral Coast (1,055)
Extending from just above Perth all the way up to Exmouth, the Coral Coast features some of the beast beaches in the country. The adventures are endless and perfect for those who can’t get enough of the coast. See the Pinnacles, enjoy wildflower walks, view native wildlife such as sealions and dolphins, and camp on your own secluded beach.
Cairns to cape York (1028kms)
Head to the top of Australia, traveling through heritage listed tropical rain forest and passing by 30,000 year old rock art galleries. Just a stone’s throw from the great barrier reef, enjoy great fishing, beach camping and crocodiles. Perfect for those with a four-wheel drive, there are plenty of historical sites to explore and private beaches to find.
Broome to Perth (2,240kms)
Experience the long, empty roads of central Western Australia by driving from Perth to semi-tropical Broome. Pass through some of the state’s most historically important towns such as Meekathara and Newman, learn about local culture and appreciate the beauty of the Australian outback.
Savannah Way (3501kms)
If you are ready for adventure, this is the road trip for you. Crossing the top of the country and visiting some of the hottest towns in Australia, experience the red rust and ancient rock formations unique to the region.
